I really doubt they even know what underground means…The important is that he has money and that he is popular that’s the only reason he has fangirls at all

There’s definitely a middle ground with artists like Tech N9ne, The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Wale, and even some less popular mainstream-sounding rappers like Cassidy, Jadakiss, Papoose, etc.
They’re not mainstream because casual fans and people who just listen to top 40 probably haven’t heard of them. But they’re generally well known to hip-hop fans and no one really sees them as underground.
